Kitekite is a waterfall out near Piha; its traditional name is thought to have been 'Ketekete', the clicking sound that Te Kawerau made to coordinate in the lead up to an attack. The mistranslation 'Kitekite' instead means 'to see a number of times'.

Kitekite will be exhibiting and for sale at the @magsartshow from 28-30 July, alongside other works from established NZ artists from across the country.

We had lunch at a man's home in Rishikesh and he had told us of how he had once come face to face with a tiger in the Tibetan forests when he was younger. The tiger had stared him down before yielding and deciding to walk away, sparing him. We got to know each other better over the next few days as we visited his house each morning for chai. He asked if I would paint a mural on the wall of his restaurant, wanting to relive the feeling of staring down the tiger, stating that he drew on that moment every time he needed courage. It was a difficult task in both medium and concept, and so after a few days of thinking about it I agreed to paint for him. He gathered together old housepaints, oils and powders for me to use (certainly not anything I’d used before, but it worked out as a great limitation) and he exchanged tea and food for my time. It was an honour to be his guest and if you ever travel to Hrishikesh you can visit the Green Leaf Cafe and experience their hospitality for yourself. A humbling lesson for me in listening and paying with time. Namaskar, peace. 🎴
